Stone Shall Bleed
A downloadable game
Prometheus felt the shiver run through him before he was properly awake. Anticipation always presaged the moment. The sun slinking into its hollow in the hills, the night rushing over the land like a blanket, the stone crackling along his flanks and falling onto the parapet below. Shedding gravel, his eyes opened.
And surveyed.
Elsinore Tower was the highest point in New Inverness, and the city swam around it in dots of light. Cars, those garish fuel-fired things, crawled the roadways and people hurried home down darkening streets.
Mortals. Scraps of idealism and skin.
The night was not a place for their kind. This was the hour of the Grotesk.
As in ages past, Prometheus flexed his claws. There were much worse things that walked under the light of the moon, and although the old compacts had been broken, it was his nature to remain faithful. He would watch over these fragile creatures until the light of the daystar returned.
A thousand signals hurtled through the air every second, invisible conversations between distant speakers. Prometheus’ bat ears shifted, filtering the noise.
There.
An emergency call. A doctor reporting being watched by something outside her house. The operator, disinterested, was telling her that she would need to call back with evidence of a crime.
Which was untrue. She would not call back. Prometheus could hear a heartbeat from the sewer nearby. Could smell a whiff of subterranean hunger.
Triangulating her location, the Grotesk shook like a dog, pebbles scattering over the precipice, and leapt off the top of the skyscraper, his wings flaring as he coasted out into the night.
If all went well, when he was done no one would even know he had even intervened.
