In the year 2020, the world was veiled in darkness.

The wind stopped.

The sea was wild.

The earth began to rot.

And humanity went into decline.

Five thousand and fifty three years have passed since then.

It is now the year 2021.

Life clings desperately to the ocean.

Two things are true: you are a mermaid, and you are rad.

Specifically, you are a radiotrophic being, feeding on the hazardous background noise of the universe to fuel your cool powers.

In the oceanic zone where you live, the Burning Sargasso, you are unique among lifeforms. Most creatures here are radiation-resistant, but you actively absorb and neutralize it. This makes you something of a keystone species.

It also gives you potent science-magic powers, and one heck of an obligation.

Radioactive Mermaids is a 17 page chill science-fantasy base-builder about regrowing an ecosystem. It is a little crunchy, but its losses are simply setbacks, and they can always be recovered from.

Radioactive Mermaids was created for Acoustic Cover Jam, as an interpretation of the title and tagline of The Gilled by georgiebats, done in probably an excessive version of my own style.
