Sweat beaded on the glass; its contents a swirl of ice cubes and amber. Half lemonade and half ice tea. Nearby, the sound from the television was a dull roar.

Helena stared at the screen, a lump forming in her throat.

Around her, the tables and bar of the Nineteenth Hole were empty---completely vacant, save for the woman who sat across from her.

"You can make it go away?" asked Helena, her voice small.

On the screen, ticker tape rolled by. Championship Golfer Embroiled In Sandbagging Scandal.

The other woman, who wore a loud Hawaiian tee and khaki shorts, was fighting to keep from grinning. She lifted a briefcase onto the table and unlocked the clasp. Papers lay within.

"It will evaporate like morning dew," she purred. "And in exchange…"

Helena thought about what the championship meant to her. About the stray dog shelter that her winnings were keeping afloat. About her partner, who believed that she was an honest golfer; that you just had to follow the rules and the world would grace you with its kindness.

"I will work for you until you decide my debt is expunged," Helena said softly.

"Indeed," said the woman, removing a single paper from the briefcase and sliding it across the table. "So you'll sign?"

Helena nodded and picked up a pen. "What choice do I have?"
