Business is booming and rents are cheap here---which is good, because you left your past life in shambles with only a few dollars to your name. You needed somewhere safe, somewhere you could get back on your feet. You needed an affordable apartment with a whole bunch of roommates.

You needed it so badly, in fact, that you didn’t bother to check the particulars before you signed onto the lease. It was cheap. And so what if there was a massive fee for moving out early? You weren’t planning on going anywhere.

On the first day of the spring you unloaded your cab, climbed the narrow stairs up from the lilypad entrance mat, and were met with your first surprise.
