Just one more shift, thought Jacob as he stared down into the black well of the maintenance shaft.

He'd been thinking just one more shift every shift since he'd gotten to this rock, and even more forcefully since the accidents began.

There were one or two of them every solar week. Medical didn't disclose who had been injured, or how severely, just that the incident had occurred during the graveyard shift, in the bowels of the colony, and that workers were to take more care.

A man who Jacob had sat with in the mess hall was missing, as were a few familiar faces from the rec hab. They might have all been assigned to different rota, but if not…

Jacob clipped onto the guide line and began to descend.
