In the 1970s the internet was an experimental system being explored by universities and the military. Computers were bulky and limited in their operation. Communication was face to face, by telephone, or by mail. Research was done at libraries. People lived in a fugue of unchallenged beliefs but were allowed to keep their secrets.

The government waged war overseas and brought broken people home. The same government invested in hospitals, schools, and public assistance programs. Health, education, and food were affordable. Human rights were afforded to some.

Religion danced cheek to cheek with the lure of the forbidden. On the radio, preachers promised fire. In the theaters, knives flashed on screens.

And in the American midwest, the Nightlands appeared like a drop of ink on a map.
