Leadbellies Quiet Amongst The Graves

In the old days, Burgania had ghosts. A weeping maiden standing in the river. An old miller who stomped around the top floor at night. A market stall outside the old cemetery that sold the best blini, but only when a cloud was covering the moon.

Their presence was sometimes inconvenient, but rarely were they malicious---if you knew them and knew what to expect from them you were never in any danger.

The Sunwar changed things.

Ghosts are a common sight now in the land between towns. They stand in solemn rows, reenact the battles that kill them, or stare helplessly at passing travelers. Whole battalions of phantoms march through the twilight in the north where the fighting was most intense.

And if this were the worst of it, it would simply be another fact of life that the modern Burganians accepted.

But the war stirred up resentment and grief, pain and loneliness, and some things followed that scent back from the other side.
