The heat lies on the hills in a stifling blanket. Birds crowd stagnant in the trees. Beaded water rolls down the side of the ice tea glass as you hold it out to your guest.
He accepts, drinks greedily. His mimicry of human form is perfect. When he hands the glass back to you, his skin is clammy and damp with the condensation.
“What gave it away?” he asks.
It wasn’t anything concrete, just a feeling. His eyes look like human eyes. “What are you going to do now?” you ask.
He takes you in. Those human eyes rove over you. You know how fast he can move.
With the back of his hand, he brushes the sweat from his brow. “Can I have some more tea?”

In the inhospitable cold of autumn, something foreboding stirs
